Governance: inspiration and daring wanted

From government to governance: what does that mean in the process of urban regeneration? The time is behind us when plans could be made from behind a desk and implemented after public consultation. In a global society, making and implementing plans means continuous consultations, with everybody being asked to contribute their creativity and resources. Daring, enthusiasm, inspiration and leadership are essential for a person who wants to steer that process.

Digital learning environment now trilingual
The digital learning environment, an interactive way of getting to learn about the ReUrbA method quickly, is now available in German, Dutch and English. The first 'lesson' is about the Lifestyle Approach. Later this year, similar ‘learning environments’ will be produced for the other principles of the ReUrbA method: Governance, Value-Oriented Planning and Creative Densification.

Fast mastery of the Lifestyle Approach!
One of ReUrbA's main objectives is to develop principles that can be put to use in urban regeneration. The Lifestyle Approach is one of the pillars of this ReUrbA method. Defining lifestyle groups has become an essential instrument in determining the kind of (future) inhabitants urban regeneration is aimed at.
The next step will be to take this principle to the one's who can benefit from it: the urban planners.
In a specially designed digital learning environment they can gain insight in the Lifestyle Approach in much the same way that the ReUrbA method is conceived: through learning by applying.

Where to find the money?
Flying Experts advise Saarbrücken

Statement for Strong Cities

Why is it important to invest in our cities? As the end of the ReUrbA project approaches, the partners think it is time for a Statement for Strong Cities to answer this question. The statement will make clear why it's important to invest in our cities and how ReUrbA strategies and experiences can contribute to solving city problems. To back up the content of the statement, interviews will take place with various prominent persons involved in urban regeneration.

PARTNER ZUID-HOLLAND
A new rail concept helps urban regeneration
The western part of the Netherlands is already very densely populated. Even so, there are plans to house even more people there. This appears to be possible using a new rail concept that results in better transport and more space for homes and offices. The Netherlands does not have many city-rail links, but this idea will help it to catch up.

PARTNER ROTTERDAM
Rotterdam is changing
The second city of the Netherlands was always the world's #1 port. These days, Rotterdam is more varied. Sixty per cent of the economic activity now consists of business services. So different areas are needed for the business community, and they have to be in the city itself now. So a large but outdated industrial estate is being entirely renovated in an 'extreme makeover'.

PARTNER SAARBRÜCKEN
Planner in Saarbrücken

Joachim Schwarz is a traffic planner in Saarbrücken. There was a time when his city was a flourishing industrial heartland, but times have changed dramatically. How can you reverse the situation? Joachim is involved with a group of planners who think they have the answer: they want to rebuild a part of the city. The idea isn't cheap but the planners are convinced that their approach will work. But how do you convince the decision-makers and financiers?

PARTNER LONDON

PARTNER NEWCASTLE
Save Our Scotswood!

Committed, strong-willed, but pragmatic as well. The Scotswood residents fought for their part in the decision-making process.
