PROVINCE OF SOUTH HOLLAND
Double Dutch, no double Dutch
The densely-populated part of the Netherlands that includes the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague faces two major problems: a shortage of housing and a shortage of public transport services. There is a smart idea for tackling both problems together in the area around Rotterdam and The Hague. A high-frequency rail link with extra stations will improve accessibility, and new urban buildings in and around stations will provide new housing and office accommodation. In this way, public transport will become an alternative to the car for many more people.

ROTTERDAM
Spaanse Polder: extreme makeover
Business park Spaanse Polder (Rotterdam) will be completely restructured during the next fifteen years. It has to become a modern mixed park of
high-quality appearance. Authorities and entrepreneurs work together to, little by little, carry out a joint action plan.

NEWCASTLE
A new approach for the Westend
The West End faces dilapidation, an exodus of inhabitants and a worsening image. A master plan should turn the tide.

SAARBRÜCKEN
City on the River
Saarbrücken, a former mining town faces an exodus of the relatively privileged. The town is left behind with an increasingly ageing population. Redevelopment of the riverfront (shops and up-market housing) should strengthen the socio-economic base (a plan called "Stadtmitte am Fluss").
But first, a highway parallel to the river will be tunnelled.

LONDON St. Paul's Church
In London's Bow District (Eastend), a low-income area, a church has been transformed into a multi-functional building. Church space became redundant when church-attendance declined, so parts of the building have been converted into a community-centre, a gallery and a fitness centre for the physically handicapped.
