Governance: some tips

ReUrbA partners advise Newcastle on governance
'Say what you do and do what you say'. It was one of the pieces of advice Newcastle received from the partners during the sixth Network Group Meeting, held in the beginning of September 2005.

Governance was the main theme of the meeting. After a visit to Scotswood, the Newcastle neighbourhood that is being regenerated, the attendants of the meeting came up with useful tips and advice for the process of governance.

We regret that the complete set of recommendations is confidential and consequently only available to ReUrbA-partners.

We are happy, however, to pass some universal recommendations

1. The most important thing is to keep promises, as failing to do so has been a cause for frustration in the past.

2. An emotion strategy should be drawn up as a sideline to the project, in order to deal with the fears of the residents and to create positive emotions.

3. A marketing and event budget might be very useful, as is aiming for quick wins, to be accomplished together with the residents. These short term successes create an awareness that things are changing for the better.

4. Consulting with the people from the neighbourhoods involved is very important. Instead of telling them what is decided, the local government should continue to involve them and work together in working groups. Therefore these working groups should be a long term instrument.
