The North West Europe Programme belongs to the European Community Initiative INTERREG IIIB which supports transnational co-operation in the field of spatial development between national, regional and local authorities and a wide range of non-governmental organisations. The objective is to achieve a more cohesive, balanced and sustainable territorial development in the Community and better territorial integration. Between 2000-2006 the Programme will allocate € 330 million of European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) to forward-looking projects in the field of territorial development that contribute to the above mentioned objective.

Website is being developed. As a result of modern structural changes, many parts of Europe have de-industrialised, leaving unemployment and physical dereliction. Dealing with industrial sites is expensive, calling for innovative solutions; a redundant plant is rarely viewed as a heritage resource. To encourage the appreciation, understanding, protection and promotion of this common history as a means of achieving economic growth, the European Network of Industrial Heritage was formerly established.

Optimal Planning Through Implementation of Mobility Management (Optimum II) will address the increasing traffic congestion at busy locations in urban areas. OPTIMUM2 searches for attractive alternatives to cars and has introduced a user-oriented approach. Eight partners will conduct ten trial projects, to tackle the accessibility issue.

Within North-West Europe six partners have come together to improve regenerating their brownfield sites by sharing experience and developing new concepts and innovative approaches: An old railway yard in Stuttgart (Germany), dockyards in Nantes (France) and Medway (UK), old coalmines in Torfaen (Wales), abandoned textile works in Tilburg (The Netherlands), and the Hart van Zuid in Hengelo (The Netherlands).
