The Scotswood paradox
Look at the picture. A quiet street, fine houses overlooking those lush green hills. Who wouldn't like to live here?
Take a closer look: one of those nice houses is boarded up. That is no accident: whole streets are going to be demolished. Scotswood, Newcastle. Most Newcastle citizens would rather die than live here. But not the ones who grew up here: they would rather die than leave. Welcome to the Scotswood paradox.
